As you likely know, restaurants were some of the hardest hit during the coronavirus crisis. Thankfully, celebrities like chef Guy Fieri are trying to change that. Recently, the celeb chef has been raising money for restaurant employees who lost their job to COVID-19.
Coronavirus' Impact On The Food Industry
All across the country, cooks and waitstaff don't have enough income to pay rent due to the pandemic. When celebrity chef Guy Fieri saw this, he knew he needed to do something. Now, he's raised over $21 million through the Restaurant Employee Relief Fund, a non-profit that Fieri managed to create in just a few days. Talk about initiative!
The goal of the Fund is clear: help "restaurant workers who suffered financially due to the COVID-19 health and economic crisis." Within hours of announcing the program, many in the restaurant industry expressed their gratitude for the Fund. "As someone who works in a restaurant I'm not sure people realize how much we're struggling. We're somehow simultaneously essential and expendable. My hours have been cut drastically, tips are awful and if they don't pass some sort of stimulus I don't know how I'll pay my rent," said user AlstarNC on Twitter. She and other users shared their experiences of trying to get by in the food industry during the pandemic.
What no one could predict was that Fieri was just getting started...
Guy Fieri To The Rescue
After creating a non-profit, Fieri showed no signs of slowing down. Next, he partnered up with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation to help raise funds to educate restaurant workers during the lockdown. It seems as though Fieri has done nothing but work to raise money for those in the food industry. He's also sent personal videos to big brands like Coke, Pepsi, UberEats, and others, asking for donations.
In total, Fieri has earned over $21 million for restaurant workers in need. Deservedly so, fans have been very vocal about their love for Fieri! "Whether he's feeding firefighters battling fires in Ca or officiating 101 gay weddings in Miami, or feeding thousands of fire victims everyday in 2017 and 2018, or helping out Make a Wish kids, or just being a tremendous help to small businesses everywhere, he never ceases to amaze," commented user ScienceIsLife on Twitter. "As a regular viewer of GuysGroceryGames, this is absolutely on-par with when he just gives $20k to people he thinks deserve it without having to play the game," added slbarett87. Fans cannot wait to see what Guy Fieri does next – and neither can we!
