In 2017, world-famous rapper Eminem opened up a limited-time pop-up restaurant named "Mom's Spaghetti," after a line in his hit song "Lose Yourself." Now, however, he's opened up a permanent version of the restaurant!
Eminem Opens His Own Restaurant
Four years ago, Eminem opened up a pop-up restaurant called Mom's Spaghetti to promote his new album, Revival. The name came from his timeless track "Lose Yourself," which includes the line: "His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. There's vomit on his sweater already: Mom's spaghetti." Thanks to the popularity of both "Lose Yourself" and Eminem, the pop-up restaurant became a massive hit. So, it should come as no surprise that now the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, has decided to open up a permanent location for Mom's Spaghetti in downtown Detroit, the rapper's hometown.
What does Mom's Spaghetti serve? As you might have guessed: spaghetti! One can get plain spaghetti or add meatballs or "rabbit balls," which are just vegan meatballs. You can also purchase a spaghetti sandwich, which has become a Midwest favorite over the past few decades. For those who have never had a spaghetti sandwich, it's exactly what it sounds like: spaghetti served between two pieces of garlic bread. Finally, one can pick from a few different drinks, including Mountain Dew and Pepsi.
However, there's a more important question: how does the spaghetti taste? According to one of the first professional reviewers: pretty darn good! While it tastes "more homespun than chef-driven," the reviewer said it tastes "less salty than your low-end sauce from a jar."
"It's not the kind of pasta you'd expect if your grandma came from Italy on a boat," another reviewer said. "It's more like the spaghetti you'd know if your mom came to Michigan on a bus." But, by far, the biggest surprise came on opening day, when Eminem himself helped serve customers. That's right!
Mom’s Spaghetti – Now, Permanent
On opening day, Eminem fans started lining up at a whopping 5 A.M. to visit Slim Shady's new restaurant. So, you can imagine their surprise when the man himself turned up to help serve customers! The rapper served some Mom's Spaghetti's customers for the first hour of service. Along the way, he also took plenty of selfies with fans, bringing big smiles to their faces. Of course, as always, Mathers wore a plain hoodie and his traditional scowl. While he might not have seemed too happy to be there, everyone knows that's simply his persona! The 48-year-old then left the long line to the professionals working in his restaurant.
Want to try out Mom's Spaghetti's the next time you're in Detroit? It's very easy! Located in downtown, the spot remains open from 4 P.M. to midnight, Wednesday through Sunday. It's the perfect place to hit up after a bit of bar-hopping, when your hunger hits its peak. "The previous pop-ups were really a test for us to determine whether there was enthusiasm for a regularly occurring Mom's Spaghetti spot that would be open all year long," said Eminem's manager Paul Rosenberg in a statement ahead of the opening.
