However, the craze started all the way back in 1981 when McDonald's released the McRib. While it did not sell well long-term, McDonald's found that if they brought it back for limited times, it sold incredibly well! Now, the fast-food giant has announced the return of the McRib once again!

It all started back in 1981, in the city of Kansas City. That's when and where McDonald's first released the McRib, and it quickly became a local favorite. However, when it debuted nationally just a few months later, the sandwich failed to sell incredibly well. So, in 1984, McDonald's decided to take the item off the menu. However, they came up with an even better idea in the process: what about bringing it back each fall for a limited time when people wanted a hearty, hot sandwich. Now, the return of the McRib is once again upon us!
"In the 80s, the masterminds behind McDonald's food innovation had a truly unique idea: an undeniably delicious sandwich that could be enjoyed during the colder seasons," said Mike Bullington, Senior Archives Manager at McDonald's. "Whether you're a McRib loyalist or first-timer, there is no denying that the McRib is one of the most iconic sandwiches of the last four decades and we have thousands of emails and tweets from fans to prove it."
Fun fact: while McRibs are only available in America from time to time, they are actually a permanent menu item in both Germany and Luxembourg! As you probably already know, the idea of a limited-time sandwich deal worked wonders in the United States. Especially in the age of social media advertisement, McDonald's hype-up of the sandwich has caused it to sell out in just a few days in recent years. For those of you who are great at math, you probably already realized that the McRib will turn 40 years old this year! So, does McDonald's have anything planned for the return of its most famous sandwich? As of yet, they have not announced anything - however, we wouldn't be surprised if they do. From celebrity-endorsed meals to limited-edition Happy Meal toys for adults, McDonald's has been killing the promotion game recently. Right now, we only know one detail: the McRib will return on November 1, 2021.
If you have never enjoyed the legendary sandwich before, you are really missing out! The McRib is a delicious, albeit a little strange, boneless pork patty covered in sweet barbecue sauce, topped with raw onions and vinegary pickles, and served on a soft bun. No questions asked, the item is tasty and fun, made even more so by its fleeting presence. In fact, it's pretty philosophical when you think about it. The McRib teaches us all to enjoy the good things in life, because they will not last forever.
So, make sure to pick up a McRib this holiday season, before it returns to the McDonald's vault for another year!
