Make no mistake: stealing a car is a very serious crime. However, occasionally, it can also be amusing. You see, one Oklahoma man stole a Doritos truckā¦for the food and "fun!" It ended in a massive police chase before he gave up his delicious getaway car.
Stealing A Doritos Truck
Stealing a truck carrying bags and bags of delicious chips sounds like part of a Grand Theft Auto mission. No sane person would do something like that, right? Well, when one Oklahoma citizen found himself bored and hungry, that's precisely what he did. 34-year-old Joshua Karpe simply could not contain his excitement when he discovered a Frito-Lay truck empty at the gas station, with the keys inside. As Karpe would later explain, he doesn't exactly know why he jumped inside and stole the vehicle. He certainly didn't have a plan; the car thief says he was utterly acting on impulse.
Of course, that explanation did not fly with the Enid Police Department. Regardless of his reasons, when Karpe jumped into the truck and left at full speed, he broke many laws. Soon enough, a serious police chase ensued. However, Karpe simply refused to give up his new possession. As a result, the mysterious driver of the Doritos vehicle had police on his tail for over an hour, traveling a whopping 100 miles. Certainly, do not try this at home, kids!
Thankfully, the chase ended nearly peacefully...
Police Chase Ended (Almost) Peacefully
Unfortunately, during Karpe's escapade, he managed to hit at least two police cars with the Doritos truck. That's when more severe measures needed to be taken. "Officers Brett Moore and Trey Kirkhart located the pursuit turning north on 30th Street," the Enid Police later wrote on Facebook. In the end, the chase ended as one of the truck's tires went flat. "Officer Moore advised the vehicle was traveling extremely slow, so he approached the vehicle and ordered the driver out," said Captain Jeff Spruill of the Oklahoma City Police Department said after the incident. Within a few moments, Karpe was out of the car and in the back of the police cruiser.
After his arrest, the police officers took Karpe to the Oklahoma City jail. "The driver complied and was taken into custody. Officer Moore then entered the stolen truck and put it in park to stop it," Captain Spruill added. While there is some humor to find in the story, four law enforcement agencies had to participate in the chase to catch the truck: the Oklahoma City Police Department, the Enid Police Department, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Garfield County Sheriff's Office. Of course, these officers could have been working on other cases or saving lives.
As such, the Enid Police Department cannot wait to hear more of Karpe's story. "I would love to know the motivation of stealing a truck that's very, very easy to spot and doesn't go very fast. What do you think you're going to do with a truck like that?" Only time will tell if the 34-year-old felt more hungry, bored, or simply crazy...
