As more and more Europeans are vaccinated, Premier League soccer has started allowing fans back into the games. Now, fans will be able to catch more than a great game - they can also drink their coffee tea from edible cups!
New Idea For Soccer Fans
For those who don't know, Manchester City remains one of the biggest teams in soccer. Now, they're not only the reigning champions of the English Premier League, they've become the champions of recycling! Why? Well, they've started offering edible coffee and tea cups at their 55,000 seat Etihad Stadium. In fact, during their first home game, the stadium produced 0 pounds of disposable hot drinks cups. That's pretty incredible since England uses a whopping 2.5 billion disposable cups every year. That's right!
"For the first time on Campus, an 'edible coffee cup' will also be introduced. This fantastic and innovative solution provides an amazing solution to waste, just eat your cup," said Etihad Stadium in a statement. The best part of all? Anyone can enjoy this cup! Scottish startup BioBite, who created the cup, made a 100-calorie vegan cookie in the shape of a small coffee cup. Not only is it vegan, but it also keeps the drink hot for 30 minutes, remains crunchy for 45 minutes, and even stays leak-poof for 12 hours!

Innovative Edible Coffee Cups
In case you didn't know, there are various problems with making fully recyclable hot drinks paper cups. Most notably, the combination of heatproof inner lining and paper together makes them very hard to recycle. That's why even the largest fast-food chains do not have recyclable hot cups!
Now, it appears that edible cups might provide the best solution! Not only that, but the cups created by firms like BioBite could one day cost less than other hot cups! Even now, 240 of their edible coffee cups cost $111, just 14 cents more than what Starbucks pays for their cups - and BioBite is bringing down their costs every year! Meanwhile, another edible cup maker, Bulgarian brand Cupffee, has an even lower price at just 40 cents a cup.
There's one big problem with bringing these edible cups to the United States: the lid. You see in they are made for European cities, where a much more significant portion of the population walks around. However, here in the States, a country set up for driving, lids are essential. Still, that's not stopping Europe from plowing ahead with edible coffee cups. Meanwhile, Etihad Stadium has also started offering fully recyclable beer cups made of recycled paper and cardboard. How incredible!
