As you know, the fried chicken sandwich wars have been raging for some time. Ever since Popeye's debuted their new sandwich to stellar reviews, every fast-food chain has debuted a competitor. Now, however, there's a new kid on the block, but its unlike any chicken sandwich you've seen before. This one includes ice cream - that's right!
The Fried Chicken Ice Cream Sandwich
We know what you're thinking: why would anyone slather a chicken sandwich in ice cream? Well, the owner and chef of Houston-based restaurant Mico’s Hot Chicken, Kimico Frydenlund, wants you to give it a shot before you write the Fried Chicken Ice Cream Sandwich a shot. Previously, Mico's only served Nashville-style hot chicken and regular chicken sandwiches. However, recently, they started offering delicious vanilla ice cream as a topping for its signature chicken sandwiches.
In fact, Frydenlund felt a little worried at first herself. “I saw the idea somewhere on social media and thought it was so crazy that I had to give it a try,” she explained. “To our surprise, we actually liked it!” However, Frydenlund could never have predicted the response she would receive for the sandwich. “I knew it would get people talking,” she said. “I didn’t know it would become controversial to the point where we’ve had comments where people are hoping our business fails or I lose everything I love. That was pretty shocking, to say the least.”
It all started when some Twitter and Instagram commenters accusing the restaurant of “promoting diabetes and heart attacks.” Sadly, that was just the beginning of the disparaging comments...
Worth The Hate?
As soon as Mico's poster a picture of the ice cream-topped sandwiches on Instagram, the comments instantly started coming in. Unfortunately for them, not everyone remained nice. “I just reported this post for assault,” one user - who never even tried the sandwich - wrote beneath the Instagram post. “This is treason.” Others were tepid, but at least kinder in their responses. “My mind says hell naw, but I’m quite intrigued,” another commenter posted. We have a little reminder for all those people: if you don't like a food, you don't have to eat it. And you certainly don't need to leave a nasty comment!
Thankfully, most of the comments on the Instagram post from earlier this month were quite supportive. Some users had already tasted the offering, writing that the Chicken Ice Cream Sandwich both “exceeded expectations” and is “definitely worth trying.” Meanwhile, others made it clear that they cannot wait to top one of Mico's sandwiches with vanilla ice cream! “My mouth LITERALLY watered watching this," one person wrote underneath a video of the sandwich being made.
Currently, there's no word about how long this famous - or infamous, depending on who you ask - sandwich will remain a part of Mico's menu. So, if this spicy, creamy, melty combination sounds good to you, and you live in the Houston area, you might want to try it out sooner rather than later.
