The Chicken Sandwich Wars continue. That's right! While Taco Bell announced its Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco, it only recently became available everywhere! How does it stack up to other chicken sandwiches? Well, let's take a look...
The Taco Bell Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco
Taco Bell has no desire to simply stand on its laurels. Instead, the fast-food company continues to add strange, but tasty, items to its menu. First, they debuted an American-Mexican breakfast menu, with things like breakfast tacos and Crunchwraps. Then, they debuted the hit Nacho Fries. Now, Taco Bell has released its Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco. Is it a taco or is it a sandwich? Well, you'll need to find out yourself starting September 4! But the fast-food giant says don't come in expecting a traditional chicken sandwich.
"The only thing the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco has in common with said sandwiches is the name," Taco Bell writes on its website. "We went sans sandwich and full-on taco to take things to the next level. Because, honestly, putting chicken between two slices of bread just doesn't cut it anymore. We took crispy, white-meat chicken. Marinated it in jalapeƱo buttermilk. Seasoned it with bold Mexican spices. Rolled it in a crunchy, tortilla-chip coating. Topped it with creamy chipotle sauce. And put it inside a puffy flatbread shell because we could. Thus, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco was born."
One can also order it "spicy" style, which also includes pickled jalapeƱos, like pickles on a chicken sandwich. But the main question still stands: what do critics think of the new creation? Let's find out...
Trying Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco
Reporters Scott Vogel, of Newsday, was one of the first food authors to try the new Taco Bell Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco. In fact, the cashier at the counter told him, "you're the first one," when he ordered it! At first, given the taco's low price point of $2.49, he didn't think it could taste very good. "How much can one reasonably expect from anything costing $2.49 these days?" Vogel wrote in his review. "I submit that it's more than a 4-inch bready shell 'shaped in an iconic taco form,' in TB's highfalutin words, dressed with two oversize chicken nuggets and a squirt of sauce."
Just looking at the taco, Vogel felt unimpressed with the way the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco looks. He said it certainly did not look as delicious as the ads showed. Vogel also thought the item did not look like a taco or a sandwich - instead, he said they reminded him of large canapes. But how did it taste? Well, he didn't love the "taco" shell itself, he liked the inner chicken!
"The bread is soft but airless, like someone slashed the tires on a bao bun, and the taste is simple and flavorless," Vogel wrote. "The taco's best part (it's all relative) is the creamy chipotle sauce, which has apparently impressed enough of the right people to earn a place on supermarket shelves." Sound good?
