Is there anything more American in the world than baseball, hot dogs, and a slice of apple pie to finish it all of? Well, one of the most American celebrity chefs ever, Guy Fieri, decided to combine all three. That's right! Created specifically for Chevrolet, Fieri's hot-dog-and-apple-pie creation will only be available for a limited time at one specific baseball stadium...
Guy Fieri Makes Food History
Fans know Food Network superstar Guy Fieri for his strange food combos, like "trash can nachos." Now, he has created a new one: he combined an apple pie and a hot dog! Incredibly, this story starts back in the 1970s. That's when marketing copywriter James Hartzell at Detroit's Campbell Ewald ad agency created an iconic commercial jingle. In the jingle, he mentioned four truly American items: “Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie, and Chevrolet." During the '70s, the song became cemented in many's heads. In fact, just this year, Car & Driver Magazine named it the best car commercial of all time. Even fifty years later, the memory of the jingle has not left the public consciousness.
To commemorate the commercial, Chevrolet asked Fieri to create a real recipe based on the commercial. That's how he created the already infamous "Apple Pie Hot Dog." As Fieri explained, he loved the idea of the challenge. “I've been a Chevy fan my whole life, since I was a little kid,” Fieri told Food & Wine Magazine. “The first hot rod I ever owned was a '71 Chevelle, which I still have. When I was a kid, it went right up the middle: were you a Ford guy or a Chevy guy, and I was always a Chevy guy.”
Now, many have had the chance to try this strange mashup of some of America's favorite foods...
Reviewing The Apple Pie Hot Dog Combo
To make sure it turned out perfect, Fieri and his team worked on the hot-dog-apple-pie combo for months! “It's got to be a really good hot dog, and it's got to be a pie crust: it can't be phyllo dough or a biscuit,” the celebrity chef explained. “We're going to treat the apple pie as more of a condiment, like a relish. Then we'll add some bacon jam in there, and a sweet-and-savory mustard.” Of course, Fieri understands some will call it an abomination. However, despite what some people online said, many have enjoyed the limited-edition concoction!
"The interior of the Apple Pie Hot Dog is generously appointed with lots of apple pie filling and bacon jam, which is equal parts wonderful and perilous; you have to eat fast or the weighty, liquidy interior will cause the whole thing to collapse," The Takeout wrote in their review of the Apple Pie Hot Dog. "The jam and pie filling aren’t even overly sweet; instead, the sweetness tastes—dare I say it?—natural, never standing out too starkly against the buttery flavors of the pastry shell. Thus, the hot dog, as salty as a hot dog ought to be, isn’t clanging against candy-sweet jam."
Sound great? Well, unfortunately, the Apple Pie Hot Dog was only sold at the Field of Dreams event in Iowa on August 12. However, Guy Fieri hopes the dish will return! "I don't think this is gonna be our last game,” he stated at the game.
